Strengthening Social Cohesion: Advancing Operations, Programming And Evidence
Key facts
Overview
Investing in social cohesion can play a critical role in improving the effectiveness of development and humanitarian programs. This is particularly true in the current context, characterized by a range of ongoing crises, including the COVID-19 pandemic, climate change, and the global economic slowdown, which are exacerbating social fragmentation, fueling tensions within and between individuals from a diversity of communities, and weakening social contracts.
Mercy Corps, the World Bank and Innovations for Poverty Action jointly organised “Strengthening Social Cohesion: Advancing Operations, Programming, and Evidence” conference. This event took place in Washington DC and online on the 5th December 2022, 09:00 AM– 05:00 PM ET.
During the first part of this all-day event, practitioners, researchers, and policymakers presented evidence about the strategies that have shown promise in strengthening social cohesion, and the measurement approaches they have been using to track progress. The second was an opportunity for participants to collectively reflect on the operational and programming implications of these insights, and to help articulate the priorities that could guide future programming and learning. The goal was to disseminate evidence and lessons learned on strategies to measure and reinforce social cohesion while highlighting operational implications for policymakers and practitioners.
